                         Call for Papers: 'waste'
Edited by Kirsten Seale and Caroline Hamilton

Walter Benjamin's work eloquently testifies that reading 'the rags, the refuse' reveals much about the constitution of culture. What a culture does not value speaks as much about that culture as what it does value. In any economy that fetishises the commodity and consumption the realm of waste, that which is left over or left behind, is politicised. The politics of waste, however, are problematic. The production and classification of waste is systemic with capitalist modes of production and their social and cultural taxonomies. Consequently, there are compelling reasons for waste to be brought to the fore as a topic for cultural enquiry. It is all the more timely given the environmental dimensions and pressures of waste.

In this issue of M/C Journal we seek contributions that consider the matter and metaphor of waste in diverse cultural contexts. Beyond considerations of waste in terms of trash and refuse we seek to delve into areas of waste overlooked: wasted time, wasted bodies, getting wasted, literal and metaphorical wastelands and dumping grounds.

Contact the editors at waste@journal.media-culture.org.au, and submit articles of 3,000 words in length through our Website at http://journal.media-culture.org.au/

NEW BOOK: Letters, Postcards, Email: Technologies of presence

Announcing a new book from Routledge: Esther Milne, Letters, Postcards,
Email: Technologies of Presence (Routledge, 2010).

http://www.routledge.com/books/Letters-Postcards-Email-isbn9780415993289

Contemporary accounts of the impact of electronic, digitally networked
cultures often construct an apocalyptic narrative of decisive shifts and
abrupt breaks: the new technology arrives, it seems, out of nowhere,
sweeping away the old and ushering in the new.  In response to such
accounts, Letters, Postcards, Email: Technologies of Presence argues
that the relation between old and new communication systems is more
complex than allowed in current media theory.  Narratives of change are
dramatically complicated by the striking continuities between different
communication systems.  In this original study, Esther Milne focuses on
one of these continuities, specifically a fantasy of presence that, she
argues, pervades the socio-technical representations of letters,
postcards and emails.

What are the enabling conditions for presence to function as a
technological and rhetorical strategy across distributed communication
platforms?  To address this question Milne explores historically the
symbolic and material representations of presence through three media
sites: a networked postal community of nineteenth-century letter
writers; postcard correspondence of First World War soldiers; and a
contemporary email discussion list.

Although a number of writers have productively historicised the
socio-critical formulations of presence, telepresence and co-presence,
these phenomena have usually been confined to representations within
electronic media. (eg Coyne, 2001; Glotz et al, 2005; Goldberg 2000;
Hjorth, 2005, 2007;  Ito, 2005; Lombard and Ditton, 1997; Mitchell,
1999; Murphy, 2000; Ryan, 1999; Sconce, 2000; Sheridan, 1992; Sobchack,
1994). What remains under-examined is the extent to which older
technologies, such as the postal service, also enable an experience of
intimacy, immediacy, immersion and presence.

Furthermore, when epistolary scholars have investigated the production
of presence through literary or aesthetic formations, they have limited
the focus to a discrete site: either the letter as a ‘real’,
historical artefact (eg Decker, 1998) or the letter’s representational
deployment through fiction and art (eg Kauffman, 1992) . In contrast,
Milne traces the affective configuration of presence through empirical
data; material bases; and rhetorical structures, to demonstrate the
interrelation between imagined presence and notions of intimacy, privacy
and disembodiment.

Although the correspondents of letters, postcards and emails are not,
usually, present to one another as they write and read their exchanges,
this does not necessarily inhibit affective communication. Indeed, this
study demonstrates how physical absence may, in some instances, provide
correspondents with intense intimacy and a spiritual, almost telepathic,
sense of the other’s presence. While corresponding by letter, postcard
or email, readers construe an imaginary, incorporeal body for their
correspondents that, in turn, reworks their interlocutor’s
self-presentation. In this regard the fantasy of presence reveals a key
paradox of cultural communication, namely that material signifiers can
be used to produce the experience of incorporeal presence.

Call for Papers, "New Groups and New Methods? The Ethnography and Qualitative Research of Online Groups"

New Groups and New Methods? The Ethnography and Qualitative Research
of Online Groups

Special Issue (volume 4, number 2, 2011) of “Etnografia e Ricerca
Qualitativa” (Ethnography and Qualitative Research)

Edited By: Stefano De Paoli & Maurizio Teli

Abstract due: 15 May 2010 (500 words)

Online groups, also called "virtual worlds", "virtual communities", or
“digital collectives”, are those social groups whose members’
interactions are mediated primarily by the Internet. Participation in
these groups has a variety of purposes and takes place via a variety
of technological platforms. These include, for instance, platforms for
social networking (such as Facebook, Second Life and social networks
in general), platforms that have a productive purpose for participants
(such as projects for the development of Free and Open Source
Software), or platforms whose goal is to provide entertainment or a
pastime for users (for instance Multiplayer Online Games such as the
Massive Multiplayer Online Games or Online Poker).

Nowadays, the social relevance of this phenomenon has become quite
clear in several areas. For example, social networks like Facebook or
MySpace now count millions of users that interact online, with a
variety of goals, practices and tools (Beer, 2008). The proliferation
of socio-technical phenomena such as Wikipedia, Creative Commons and
Free and Open Source Software has changed some of the traditional
assumptions about organizational hierarchies and paid labour (Kelty,
2008). Or again, Online Games' virtual economies are tied to real
economies, in ways that challenge traditional assumptions about
property (Castronova, 2005).

Social, cultural, economic, and technological dimensions are,
therefore, closely intertwined in the phenomenon of Online Groups. In
this special issue (volume 4, number 2, 2011) of “Etnografia e Ricerca
Qualitativa” (Ethnography and Qualitative Research) we are looking for
contributions with a strong empirical bias that can tackle this hybrid
complexity and that specifically offer reflections and practical
experiences for a discussion on the theoretical and methodological
dimensions of the phenomenon. This involves reflecting on one or more
of the following topics:

Firstly, some reflections might focus on the theoretical dimension.
Often the literature, in both the social sciences and economics, for
example Benkler’s (2006) or von Hippel’s (2004) works, has associated
the birth and proliferation of online groups with a process of
democratization and the construction of a new democratic balance of
power and knowledge. (Consider the case of Free and Open Source
Software or the advent of Web 2.0 and User Generated Content.)
However, this literature is often linked with individualistic
approaches, the methodological dimension of which does not focus on
the “fine grain” of social practices and on the power relationships
these practices might imply. One of the goals of this special issue is
therefore to stimulate a debate on how ethnographic or qualitative
research
in general can help to balance this optimistic view, in which
"online" is seen as a place of pure democracy.

Secondly, the research on online group interactions requires a
discussion of and reflection on the assumptions of traditional
qualitative and ethnographic research. Indeed, the researcher herself
is required to take part in online interactions and to use the
Internet to conduct the research. This consideration illustrates that
there is an inherent reflexive element: the researcher studies a
phenomenon that she is also contributing to identify. It is therefore
important for researchers to reflect on the use in research of the
same technologies and platforms used for online interactions. This
includes, for instance, tools for collecting qualitative data, for
analyzing data and also for the communication/dissemination of
research results. Examples could be: the use of blogs or wikis as
tools to keep and organize field notes or even to build a relationship
with participants in the online groups themselves; the use of online
resources (such as software tools) that can be used for data
collection and analysis
, for example extensions for the Firefox
browser or web-based CAQDAS software; and the use of blogs, wikis and
other platforms to disseminate research results, in this way
contributing to the construction of online interactions.

Finally, ethnographic and qualitative online research requires
specific reflections on the ethical aspects of the research. For
instance, the availability of archived material in a space that is
neither public nor private, according to classical categories in the
ethics of research, and whose authors are not always reachable, poses
challenging problems. Indeed, often the user communications and
interactions are public, in the sense that they are easily accessible
by almost anyone through an Internet connection. This type of “sharing
in a limited context” by users raises ethical questions for
researchers, as the users' original purpose was not to provide “data”
for researchers (Bakardjeva and Feenberg, 2001). Therefore, an
approach that takes the situation into account should be used when
discussing the status of public/private information in relation to
Internet conversations and interactions (Teli, Pisanu, Hakken, 2007).

In conclusion, we invite empirically grounded research papers that
address one or more of the dimensions outlined above, but which may
also expand them and include other aspects. Contributions might
include (but are not restricted to):

The ethnography and qualitative research of online groups: social
networks, online games, Wikipedia, etc.
The construction of groups: the role of the researcher and qualitative research
Ethnographic and qualitative approaches to power and to online data
Power and knowledge: digital archives, avatars
Your experiences with using online technologies for the collection and
analysis of qualitative data
The ethics of qualitative research on online groups

About the Journal:

Etnografia e ricerca qualitativa (Ethnography and Qualitative
Research) is a peer-review journal that hosts high-quality, original
ethnographic and qualitative research, combining careful empirical
observation with sound theoretical reflection. The journal has a wide
and diverse audience, and the paper accepted and published are
directed toward such an audience, not only toward the readers of the
specific research field of the writers.

The journal covers traditional areas of ethnographic inquiry, such as
urban ethnography, deviance, work and occupational communities,
immigration and ethnic relations, but also promotes the ethnographic
analysis of scientific practices and knowledge, information and
surveillance systems, religion, politics, the media, sport and the
arts. ERQ is not committed to any specific theoretical approach, and
is open to papers influenced by different theoretical traditions,
provided they are based on accurate field research. It is published in
Italian, but the web version is bilingual (Italian/English). Some
articles are also published in French.

ERQ is edited by Pier Paolo Giglioli, Alessandro Dal Lago, Giolo Fele
and Marco Marzano. Some of the most well known Italian scholars
involved in ethnography sit on the Editorial Board, which is
complemented by a prestigious International Advisory Board.

CALL FOR PAPERS THE ONLINE VIDEOGAME: NEW SPACE OF SOCIALIZATION

CALL FOR PAPERS

THE ONLINE VIDEOGAME: NEW SPACE OF SOCIALIZATION

Bilingual colloquium (French/English)
October 28 , 29  and 30, 2010
Montreal, Quebec, Canada

To play is a vital function for the development of individuals. Play
is an activity of socialization which enables learning of the
rudiments of social interaction. Since the middle of the twentieth
century, our societies have placed more value on the playful practice
at all ages. As such, playing is more and more present in numerous
spheres of society. Huizinga (1938) and Caillois (1958) assert
moreover that any playful activity is social, by definition, and gets
its real meaning when it is practised in groups. For Gadamer (1960),
the charm of playing lies primarily in the fact that it exercises a
fascination in the player. Online videogames gather more and more
followers worldwide as this phenomenon becomes more important from day
to day. It is no longer necessary to question play as a way to spend
time. Through the intervention of videogames, play has also become a
way to develop social networks, learn new communication skills and
tools, a way to learn a foreign language, a place to keep or develop
friendships, an opportunity to participate in an online community, or
even a way to be exposed to new cultures. Online videogames have
become a media of socialization, that is to say, devices of mediation
and mediatization which allow people to share large-scale information
thanks to its network of exchanges and meetings. Such spaces of
socialization arouse interactions convenient to the construction of
the “self” and to the renewal of the representations of others and the
world. Online videogames can facilitate socialization and be a carrier
of values which are not necessarily different than those found in
society. Online videogames can also be a place that facilitate values
that are not necessarily present in society in general.

Indeed, the experience as much as the manners and representations in
videogames contribute to the moulding of cognitive modes, to the
development of both technical and social skills and, in a more general
way, to the reconfiguration of one’s relationship to the world. From
this perspective, it is imperative to explore the modes of
socialization shaped by online videogames and to question the various
forms of instrumentalization, of domination, of exclusion, as well as
forms of dependence and addiction which this kind of community can
facilitate. The criteria from which the players give a value and
organize their relations into a hierarchy with other players is
potentially defined by the customs and contexts of online videogames.
The observations, the descriptions, and the analysis of the manners
and representations that are connected to the experience of online
videogames become essential as a generation is subject to building
their social referents partially through playful cyber universes. This
type of study is justified all the more as players become imbedded in
innovative modes of socialization, rehabilitation, social
reintegration, and learning, not only in school and at home, but also
in their workplace. This colloquium aims to make inventory of the
researches within game studies, while online videogames are becoming
more and more popular.

Web History - New Book

New book: WEB HISTORY

Edited by Niels Brügger, Peter Lang Publishing, New York 2010

Book synopsis
”This is the first edited volume to put the emerging field of web history on the agenda of internet research. Sixteen original chapters investigate how the use of the web has developed in the realm of web culture at large, as well as how the organization of web industries and old media institutions on the web have changed. A number of fundamental theoretical and methodological questions related to doing web history are also examined. The collection aims to explore some of the possible ways of approaching the web of the past, based on the assumption that the past is not only important for historical purposes, but because it must be taken into consideration in order to fully understand the web of the present and the web of the future. The book includes a foreword by Charles Ess and contributions from Kirsten Foot, Steven Schneider, Alexander Halavais, Ken Hillis, and more.”
