, is a focal point for academic efforts in all areas of research
and education involving games, game technologies, gameplay and game
design. The goal of the conference is the advancement of the study of
digital games, including new game technologies, capabilities, designs,
applications, educational uses, and modes of play.

FDG 2010 will include presentations of peer-reviewed papers, invited
talks by high-profile industry and academic leaders, hands-on
tutorials and topical panels on a range of subjects related to games
research and education. We invite researchers and educators to share
insights and cutting-edge results relating to game technologies and
their use.

PAPER and POSTER SUBMISSIONS
============================
FDG 2010 will accept both full paper and poster submissions. Authors
may choose to submit their papers and posters to the general
conference or to a specific theme area. The seven theme areas for FDG
2010 are described below.

1) Artificial Intelligence
Track Chair: Magy Seif El-Nasr, Simon Fraser University

We solicit papers on artificial intelligence research that provides
novel solutions to traditional game AI problems (e.g., path planning,
camera control, terrain analysis, user modeling, tactical/strategic
and decision making), supports novel game concepts or gameplay
elements (e.g. interactive drama, narrative/character development and
NPC belief/attitude/emotion modeling), provides automated or
semi-automated solutions to game production challenges (e.g., game
design, content creation, testing and procedural animation), or
describes the integration of AI technologies (e.g., machine learning,
logical inference and planning) into game AI architectures.

2) Computer Science and Games Education
Track Chair: Andrew Phelps, Rochester Institute of Technology

The Computer Science and Games Education Theme Area invites
researchers and educators to submit papers illustrating the latest
advances and innovation in curricula for games and computer science,
in both formal and informal educational contexts. All papers must show
rigorous and compelling evaluation. Topics of interest include, but
are not limited to: game design and development curricula, effective
practices and infrastructure for the use of games and game
technologies in Computer Science courses and programs, Web-based
(adaptive) educational games and interdisciplinary collaboration among
computer scientists and others to create games in educational
contexts.

3) Game Design
Track Chair: Tracy Fullerton, University of Southern California

The Game Design theme seeks detailed reports of creative practice and
methods, as well as the exploration and development of innovative
gameplay forms and mechanics. Design postmortems that rigorously
analyze the intent and effect of particular solutions, mechanics,
structures or gaming situations are very welcome. Also, research on
new models for player involvement, design for learning, participatory
design, iterative player-centered process, and investigations into the
relationship between hardware and software platforms and design are
strongly encouraged. Submissions may discuss theoretical designs or
implemented ones, but should provide evaluative evidence and rigorous
analysis of outcomes.

4) Game Studies
Track Chair: Mia Consalvo, MIT

Game Studies as a field is broadly interdisciplinary, welcoming a
variety of theoretical, methodological and computational approaches to
the study of games and play. This year, we particularly seek
submissions that investigate areas such as player experience, game
ontology, the social and cultural aspects of gameplay, cross-cultural
or global analyses, networked play (including consoles), game
aesthetics and criticism, casual and serious gaming and analysis of
new and emerging phenomena. All submissions must provide rigorous
analysis and present evaluative evidence.

5) Graphics and Interfaces
Track Chair: Steven Feiner, Columbia University

The Graphics and Interfaces theme seeks papers on all aspects of
computer graphics and user interfaces that are specifically related to
digital games, including but not limited to: animation, modeling,
rendering, 2D and 3D user interfaces, collaborative user interfaces,
mobile user interfaces, tangible user interfaces, design of
(interfaces for) Web 2.0 game focused web applications, integration of
web-based and computer/console based game worlds, augmented reality
and virtual reality, and novel interaction devices and displays.

6) Infrastructure (Databases, Networks, Security)
Track Chair: Mark Claypool, WPI

The Infrastructure track invites submissions that focus on the many
aspects of improving systems support for digital games. Suitable
papers should describe novel networks, operating systems or database
systems that are especially designed for games, or make novel use of
existing systems to support games. Topics of interest include:
networked game architectures, network protocol design for games,
latency compensation and synchronization methods, mobile and/or
resource-constrained game platforms, software and middleware support
for networked games, content delivery and adaptation, services for
supporting networked games, cheat detection and prevention, networking
and security for Web-based games and game portals, database engines
and database optimization for games, distributed database techniques
and consistency models for networked games, and data management for
games that cross physical and virtual worlds.

7) Learning in Games
Track Chair: Elisabeth Hayes, Arizona State University

Learning in Games invites papers that investigate how games contribute
to intellectual, creative, social, and embodied forms of learning in
and outside the classroom, for learners of all ages. Studies focused
on educational games as well as the learning potential of COTS games
are welcome. Research on the design of games for learning, the
outcomes of game-based learning, and learning that occurs in the
social contexts and interactions around games (such as within fan
communities) should be submitted to this track. Papers on the
professional training of game developers should be submitted to the
Computer Science and Games Education track.

All paper and poster submissions will be rigorously peer reviewed for
their technical merit (where applicable), significance, clarity and
relevance to the advancement of the study of games. All full papers
must describe a completed unit of work and show rigorous and
compelling evaluation of the ideas they present. Poster submissions
should describe novel work in progress that is not at the same level
of research maturity as a full submission.

Full papers must not exceed eight pages, but can be shorter. We will
review for quality not length! Poster submissions must not exceed two
pages. All submissions must be submiteed via
https://easychair.org/login.cgi?conf=fdg2010 and must comply with the
official ACM proceedings format using one of the templates provided at
http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html

All accepted paper and poster submissions will be published in the
conference proceedings. For a paper or poster to appear in the
proceedings, at least one author must register for the conference by
the deadline for camera-ready copy submission.

Papers from FDG 2009 and its predecessor (GDCSE 2008) are included in
the ACM Digital Library and we anticipate that all paper, poster, and
doctoral consortium publications from this year's conference will
appear there as well.

Submissions must not have been published previously. In addition, a
submission identical or substantially similar (or even a subset or
superset) in content to one submitted to FDG should not be
simultaneously under consideration at another conference or journal
during the entire FDG review process (i.e., from the submission
deadline until the notifications of decisions are emailed to authors).

WORKSHOP PROPOSALS
==================
The workshops portion of the conference provides an informal setting
for new developments to be discussed and demonstrated. We invite
proposals for full-day and half-day workshops focused on specific
topics related to the broader themes around games. We are particularly
interested in topics that will bridge different communities.

Proposals should include: A 2-page extended abstract, the objectives
and expected outcome of the workshop, the planned activities, the
background of the organizer(s), the anticipated number of
participants, and the means for soliciting and selecting
participants. Proposal should be emailed directly to the Michael
Mateas, Workshop Chair, at michaelm@cs.ucsc.edu.

DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM
===================
The FDG Doctoral Consortium provides an opportunity for a limited
group of Ph.D. students to discuss and explore their research
interests and career objectives with a panel of established games
researchers and industry professionals. The consortium has the
following objectives: (1) to provide a setting for mutual feedback on
participants' current research and guidance on future research
directions; (2) develop a supportive community of scholars and a
spirit of collaborative research; (3) support a new generation of
researchers with information and advice on academic, research,
industrial, and nontraditional career paths; and (4) contribute to the
conference goals through interaction with other researchers and
participation in conference events.

Students whose submissions to the Doctoral Consortium are accepted for
presentation will receive complimentary conference registration and
some support for their travel/housing expenses.

9:00 a.m.-10:15 a.m.: Roundtable 1: Storage and New Media: Beyond the Container Metaphor
The idea of storage operates as one of a number of helpful-though also constraining-visions of how information operates. New media connect the controversies connected to this idea of storage to long-standing disputes concerning the social role of information. How do media connect with different modes of storage? And how do issues relating to storage in turn connect with historiographical concerns? These will be the animating ideas of this roundtable.

10:45 a.m.-12:00 p.m.: Roundtable 2: The Theoretical in the Historical: De-Centering New Media History
Media historians are often trained to avoid tendencies like technological determinism and Whig history. Related to these tendencies is the practice of reifying technologies and media, setting them aside as if they were naturally separate 'things'. This roundtable pulls together papers that exemplify the practice of de-centering new and old media through grounded understandings of social praxis, understood through varying theoretical lenses.

Historiography-understood as the methods of history and as the history of history-is of particular importance to those who take an historical approach to new media. How do new media-as storage tools and as analytic devices-intersect with the methods we use to do media history? And what methodological adjustments can we see in new media research?

3:45 p.m.-5:00 p.m.: Roundtable 4: Historicizing New Media: Applying Historical Approaches to New Media Practice
The future assumes numerous forms in media practice. The idea of the future-and the sense of possibility and flexibility that often comes with it-is of particular importance to new media practice. The papers collected here address the ideas of emergence and flexibility as they relate to new media.

HCII 2009: Usability and Sociability in Computer Games and Virtual Worlds

ear all

HCI International Conference 2009
Session invitation on the topic of:
Usability and Sociability in Computer Games and Virtual Worlds

We are inviting potential presenters to join us in the session,
"Usability and Sociability in Computer Games and Virtual Worlds" in
HCI International Conference 2009 which will take place in San Diego,
USA, 19-21 July 2009.

Social oriented games such as MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online
Role Playing Games) and 3D virtual worlds (e.g. Second Life) provide a
flexible social space for the users to interact as well as an open
space that invites the user's imagination and creativity to engage in
various types of play and learning activities.
One major issue of 3D virtual worlds is the usability obstacle the
users have to overcome (the so-called "pain barrier") in order to
fully utilise this exciting 3D social technological medium. We believe
that this problem, usually due to the interface design, seriously
undermines the potential of 3D virtual worlds. Unfortunately not much
has been done to address this critical issue as most research in this
area is oriented towards the application of 3D virtual worlds,
assuming that all users are proficient in this game-like environment.
Therefore we firmly believe that there is a great potential in
researching these usability issues.

The session aims to discuss the latest findings of usability and
sociability of 3D virtual worlds. Topics include but not limited to:
a) methodologies of studying usability and sociability of games and 3D
virtual worlds
b) case studies of the application of games and 3D virtual worlds and
their usability issues
c) empirical studies of user interaction, social interaction and
social network within this context

If you are interested in joining us, please send the title of the
presentation, a 100 word abstract and your contact details to
cf559@soi.city.ac.uk by 24 October 2008 (Friday). If you have further
enquiries please do not hesitate to contact me.

Hope to see you there.

CFP, Web_site Histories: Theories, Methods, Analysis

Call for Papers

Conference title: Web_site Histories: Theories, Methods, Analysis

One-day conference, October 14th 2008. The main purpose of Web_site
Histories is to place the new and emerging field of Web History on
the research agenda and to map the field of historical website studies.

Organizer: The Centre for Internet Research, University of Aarhus,
Denmark.

The conference is associated the AoIR 9.0 conference "Rethinking
Communities, Rethinking Place" in Copenhagen (http://
conferences.aoir.org)

Confirmed keynote speakers:
Kirsten Foot, Associate Professor, University of Washington
Steven Schneider, Professor, State University of New York
Title: Object-Oriented Web Historiography.
Abstract: Foot & Schneider will present a keynote address that
focuses on their proposal of an “object-oriented” approach to
researching and writing Web history. They will consider the various
meanings of object entailed within the notion of object-oriented Web
historiography in order to advance both the theoretical foundation
and methodological rigor of developmental analyses of Web artifacts
in their hyperlinked contexts. Developmental analyses of any aspect
of the Web, whether engaged in contemporaneously or retrospectively,
entail dynamics within and between the (co)producers of Web
artifacts, production practices and techniques, and Web artifacts
themselves. These dynamics make it difficult but very important for
scholars to identify and situate their object(s) of analysis
historically and theoretically. See extended description at http://
www.cfi.au.dk/en/events/conferences/wsh08/keynote.
Kirsten Foot and Steven Schneider are the authors of Web Campaigning
(MIT Press 2006) as well as a number of articles about Web Sphere
Analysis.

A panel will round off the conference by discussing the future
directions of studies of Web History. Besides Kirsten Foot and Steven
Schneider panel participant will be Niels Brügger, Associate
Professor, the Centre for Internet Research, University of Aarhus.

The main purpose of Web_site Histories is to place the new and
emerging field of Web History on the research agenda and to map the
field of historical website studies. The focus on the Web can be seen
as a specialization within the larger field of Internet History, but
with another subset of questions and challenges. The underscore in
the title reflects the uncertainty and variability of the object of
study – are we talking about the Web in general, Web Spheres,
individual websites, or web pages? The conference welcomes papers on
any of these approaches or any other theme, topic or idea connected
to the theories, methods or analysis of Web History. Theoretical
approaches could be discussions of the object of study or reflections
on doing historical research on this particular subject.
Methodological approaches may include abstract or more specific
considerations of the range of applicable methods, both old and new,
to Web History. Finally, the analytical approach welcomes
contributions exploring the practical hazards and possibilities of
this special kind of empirical material, as well as papers on
concrete empirical studies.

Papers are also welcome on a wide array of historically-grounded
themes. The topics below are examples of the kinds of issues paper
presenters are invited to address — but are not intended to limit
topics suitable for paper submissions:
· General as well as more specific histories of the development
of the Web, focusing on, for instance, technology, graphic design,
culture etc.
· The history of the Web as a subset of the history of the
Internet, with emphasis on, for instance, the development of
hardware, software and protocols
· The organizational architecture of the Web in a global,
national, transnational or local perspective
· Defining moments and events on the Web, either in terms of how

the Web was conceived and built, or in terms of how it is or was
perceived and used
· Demographical, social, cultural, or other factors influencing
Web use and uptake
· Political, economic, institutional or personal histories of
the Web
· The growing popularity of social networking sites in a
historical perspective
· Interactivity, genre and media discussions in relation to the
Web
· The histories of expectations in pre-web time meeting the
reality of the Web
· Source availability and validity – the archiving of the Web
· The history of the Web in the larger framework of media history

Please send abstracts of no more than 300 words by April 15th 2008
(further instructions at http://www.cfi.au.dk/en/wsh08). After a
process of double-blind peer review, authors will be notified of
accepted papers by May 15th. Full papers will be due by August 31st
2008. Please note that there is a maximum of 30 participants, and
priority will be given to paper presenters. Paper presentations will
consist of short presentations with opponents/discussants and
roundtable-style discussions. Presenters are therefore also expected
to act as opponents/discussants.

Participation in the conference is free, and coffee and lunch is
included (yes, there is such a thing as a free lunch). Following the
conference, papers will be considered for inclusion in an edited
volume on Web Histories.

The conference takes place at the University of Aarhus, two days
before the start of the AoIR 9.0 conference in Copenhagen (http://
conferences.aoir.org). Aarhus is situated west of Copenhagen and is
the second largest city in Denmark with a population of approximately
300,000. It is accessible by train or by air via the Aarhus or
Billund airports. Read more about Aarhus and the university: http://
www.au.dk/en/why and http://www.au.dk/en/aarhus.htm.

The Centre for Internet Research is located at the Institute of
Information and Media Studies, and was established in September 2000
in order to promote research into the social and cultural
implications and functions of the internet. Read more about the
