Living between Fear and Expectation  
An International Conference on the Production of In/security and In/equality in Latin America  
Organized by the Latin American Futures’ Project (Sida/Sarec’s Support for a Teaching and Research environment), Institute of Latin American Studies, Stockholm University

Throughout Latin America, dreams and hopes of a better life often come entangled with experiences of exclusion and social inequality, fears of impoverishment, and a pervasive sense of insecurity.  
This conference encourages participants to explore the lived tension between fear and expectation. It calls for scholarly attention to the intersections of inequality and insecurity in times when people and governments react or adapt to ongoing transnational flows of policies, capital, commodities, and persons. The conference will include plenary lectures by invited keynote speakers and a series of parallel sessions, specifically organized around the theme of the conference.  
We welcome paper proposals from scholars, practitioners and graduate students.  Questions and issues to be explored include:  
·        Constitutions, Changes and Continuities  
·        Spaces of Struggle  
·        In/equalities and In/securities  
·        Bodies and Markets  
Abstracts of no more than 300 words should be submitted to machado_t@lai.su.seormagnus_l@lai.su.se. Please write “Conference Stockholm” as the topic of your e-mail.    
Deadline for submission of abstracts is March 01, 2009. Submitters will be notified by March 20, 2009.
