CFP Brazilian Journalism Today

A special issue of Journalism: Theory, practice and criticism

Brazilian Journalism – the status of research, education, and media

Guest Editors:

José Marques de Melo – University of São Paulo, Brazil

Sonia Virginia Moreira – Rio de Janeiro State University, Brazil

Brazilian journalism has been a field of interest for communication researchers since the first journalism schools were established in the country during the 1930s and 1940s. Although research on the topic has been ongoing, additional work is necessary to provide a comprehensive picture of where Brazilian journalism stands and what it looks like today.

The progress of journalism education and practice in Brazil is unquestionable: there are approximately 400 journalism schools across the country, media outlets are present in all regions, scholarship on journalism is regularly carried out by professors, professionals and media organizations, and every year large numbers of graduate students conduct research on a variety of subjects related to journalism. Additionally, a Society for Brazilian Researchers in Journalism was recently founded.

In such a context, this special edition of Journalism : Theory, practice and criticism represents a key opportunity for Brazilian scholars to present the results of their work to the international community. The editors would welcome articles concerning the following themes or subjects:

  • Journalism education, either from a historical view or regarding its present conditions
  • Current issues of Journalism research
  • Journalism and democracy in Brazil
  • Studies on national or regional media, including comparative studies of media and/or countries
  • Authors and references: the contemporary bibliography of Journalism in Brazil.
  • Trends for Journalism research, Journalism education, and Journalism practice
